Dengan luas wilayah yang hanya sebesar 0,56 persen dari luas Provinsi Kalimantan Timur, Kota Samarinda merupakan wilayah terkecil ketiga setelah Kota Bontang dan Kota Balikpapan. Ditinjau berdasarkan batas wilayahnya, Kota Samarinda seluruhnya dikelilingi oleh Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara.
tradisi lisan penduduk Samarinda menyebutkan, asal-usul nama kota Samarindah adaah “Samarendah” yang dilatarbelakangi oleh posisi sama rendahnya permukaan Sungai Mahakam dengan pesisir daratan kota yang membentenginya.
Tempo dulu, setiap kali air sungai pasang, kawasan tepian kota selalu tenggelam. Selanjutnya, tepian Mahakam mengalami pengurukan/penimbunan berkali-kali hingga kini bertambah 2 meter dari ketinggian semula.
Oemar Dachlan mengungkapkan, asal kata “sama randah” dari bahasa Banjar karena permukaan tanah yang tetap rendah, tidak bergerak, bukan permukaan sungai yang airnya naik-turun. Ini disebabkan jika patokannya sungai, maka istilahnya adalah “sama tinggi”, bukan “sama rendah”. Sebutan “sama-randah” inilah yang mula-mula disematkan sebagai nama lokasi yang terletak di pinggir sungai Mahakam. Lama-kelamaan nama tersebut berkembang menjadi sebuah lafal yang melodius: “Samarinda”.
2. Papua
Papua adalah sebuah pulau yang terletak di sebelah utara Australia dan merupakan bagian dari wilayah timur Indonesia. Sebagian besar daratan Papua masih berupa hutan belantara. Papua merupakan pulau terbesar kedua di dunia setelah Greenland.
Perkembangan asal usul nama pulau Papua memiliki perjalanan yang panjang seiring dengan sejarah interaksi antara bangsa asing dengan masyarakat Papua, termasuk pula dengan bahasa-bahasa lokal dalam memaknai nama Papua.
Provinsi Papua, sebelumnya mencakup seluruh wilayah Indonesia di Pulau Papua. Pada masa pemerintahan kolonial Hindia Belanda, wilayah ini dikenal sebagai Nugini Belanda (Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea atau Dutch New Guinea). Namun, Setelah bergabung dengan Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia, wilayah ini dikenal sebagai Provinsi Irian Barat sejak tahun 1963 hingga 1973.
Namanya kemudian diganti menjadi Irian Jaya oleh Soeharto pada saat meresmikan tambang tembaga dan emas Freeport, nama yang tetap digunakan secara resmi sampai terbitnya Undang-Undang No. 21 Tahun 2001 tentang Otonomi Khusus Papua mengamanatkan nama provinsi ini untuk diganti menjadi Papua. Dan akhirnya pada tahun 2003, disertai oleh berbagai protes (penggabungan Papua Tengah dan Papua Timur), Papua dibagi menjadi dua provinsi oleh pemerintah Indonesia; bagian timur tetap memakai nama Papua sedangkan bagian baratnya menjadi Provinsi Irian Jaya Barat (kemudian menjadi Papua Barat). Bagian timur inilah yang menjadi wilayah Provinsi Papua pada saat ini.
Kabupaten Puncak Jaya merupakan kota tertinggi di pulau Papua, sedangkan kota yang terendah adalah kota Merauke. Sebagai daerah tropis dan wilayah kepulauan, pulau Papua memiliki kelembapan udara relative lebih tinggi berkisar antara 80-89% kondisi geografis yang bervariasi ini mempengaruhi kondisi penyebaran penduduk yang tidak merata. Pada tahun 1990 penduduk di pulau Papua berjumlah 1.648.708 jiwa dan meningkat menjadi sekitar 2,8 juta jiwa pada tahun 2006 dan 4.303.707 jiwa pada tahun 2020. Dengan ketinggian 4.884 m, Puncak Jaya merupakan puncak tertinggi di Indonesia sekaligus di Oseania.
Jika dilihat dari karakteristik budaya, mata pencaharian dan pola kehidupannya, penduduk asli Papua itu dapat dibagi dalam dua kelompok besar, yaitu Papua pegunungan atau pedalaman, dataran tinggi dan Papua dataran rendah dan pesisir.
Pola kepercayaan agama tradisional masyarakat Papua menyatu dan menyerap ke segala aspek kehidupan, mereka memiliki suatu pandangan dunia yang integral yang erat kaitannya satu sama lain antar dunia yang material dan spiritual, yang sekuler dan sakral dan keduanya berfungsi bersama-sama.
Kelompok suku asli di Papua terdiri dari 25 suku, dengan bahasa yang masing-masing berbeda. Namun, saat ini beberapa penduduk masyarakat Papua Asli juga tersebar ke beberapa daerah di Indonesia di antara Jawa, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali, NTT dan NTB. Beberapa di antara mereka juga melakukan perkawinan campur dengan suku lain.
